Hola, my name is Maria Elena Juarez de Santiago. I have been receiving guests in my home for 31 years. I am 58 years old. I'm married to Joaquin Santiago. He is a merchant.
I have three adult children, all three of whom are university graduates. The eldest is an industrial engineer. The second is a psychologist, and the third is an architect, who obtained a partial scholarship at the private university Rafael Landívar University of Guatemala. It's not easy for a young person to complete university here in Guatemala, so this is a grand accomplishment!
I attribute much of their success to the presence and influence of achievement-minded foreigners in my home. I started in this activity when my children were little because it was an opportunity to work from home. Over time I realized that I liked more and more hosting people with different cultures in my home. I have verified that the influence of foreigners has been positive in the lives of my children to achieve their goals and those of my husband and I.
I really like meeting people from other countries, sharing my culture and learning from their culture. My husband and I have had the opportunity to travel to Israel, Spain and Belgium at the invitation of friends who stayed in our house and who loved the experience of living there. Now they are more than guests; they are my friends. Soon we plan to travel to the United States, where we hope to visit many friends who were once guests in our home.
My house has 4 bedrooms, 1 with a private bathroom and 3 with a shared bathroom. The common areas are the dining room and a terrace with views of the volcanoes where you can rest, read a book or do your Spanish homework. The accommodation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner from Monday to Friday and breakfast on Saturday, (I can adapt to the meal tastes of each guest), hot water and Wi-Fi.
The room with a private bathroom has a price of Q1,500.00 per week. The room with a shared bathroom has a price of Q1,200.00 per person. The rooms can be shared. I can furnish the rooms with more beds. All fees are paid direrctly to me, the homeowner.
During Holy Week, which is a very important holiday for the Catholic inhabitants of Guatemala, we can host guests, but we offer them only a snack so that they can walk the streets of the city with food in their bag, with the exception of the most important days of this festival. They are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I don't work in the month of December.
Places near my home include the Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint, the Colonia Candelaria basketball court and the Candelaria Ruins. We are twenty minutes walking distance to Central Park.
