Why Choose an independent spanish teacher?

Independent Spanish teachers can earn a living wage

The average Spanish language school in Antigua, Guatemala pays its teachers from $2.50 to $4.00 per hour while charging the student $14.00 to $20.00 per hour. The independent Spanish teachers listed on our site earn 100% of the money that the student pays for the class. We recommend $12.00 per hour with a minimum package of 10 classes. You will pay the teachers directly through a mutually agreed upon method to ensure that they receive exactly the pay publicized. While $12.00 per hour may not seem sufficient, in Guatemala, this is a living wage that allows our instructors to support themselves and their families. With the most typical monthly salary (outside of the capital) in Guatemala being just $491.00, an independent Spanish teacher with 5 students per day, 5 days per week can earn $1,200.00 per month, well above average, and well above the $640.00 or so per month they would earn with the higher paying Spanish schools in Guatemala.

The bare numbers:

Most typical monthly salary in Guatemala: $491.00 *

Average monthly salary at a decent Spanish school: $400.00 - $640.00

Average monthly salary potential of an Independent Spanish teacher: $1,200.00

* According to Wikipedia Typical Monthly Salaries in Latin America.

The World Bank 2023 estimates that 55.1% of Guatemala's population lives in poverty.

You can change others' lives while learning a valuable skill (and saving money).

With the emphasis on fair trade practices for products such as textiles, coffee and fruit, those providing services are often overlooked. Many choose to ensure that the products they consume and the clothes they wear are produced fairly by companies that use sustainable methods and provide dignified salaries and favorable working conditions. To avoid hypocrisy, we must extend that to service providers as well. Independent Spanish teachers offer a life-changing service.

Learning Spanish, or any foreign language, has great benefits socially and cognitively,  positively impacting your life. With your inexpensive $12/hour class,  you have the opportunity to change the life of your instructor and the lives of your instructor's family.
