Erik, a medical student, says, “Language is one of the most wonderful ways to connect with others. My greatest driving goal is to be a bilingual physician that can connect through language with the communities that I hope to serve. However, any opportunity to use my Spanish is very exciting to me.”
“I have spent a lot of time in Latin America, and the places where I [live and] have lived have large Spanish speaking communities. I have been to Peru, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. To be entirely honest, without Spanish none of these trips would’ve been in any way the same. Seeing historical sites and enjoying the beauty of these countries was wonderful, but what is actually impactful to me and important is the potential to meet different people and have my perspectives expanded. The Spanish language made these experiences truly impactful and amazing for me. Through Spanish I have made many lifelong friends.”
Erik's favorite word is ojalá because “its history and origins [from the Arabic] are so fascinating! And of course its meaning is quite lovely [hopefully, I hope, god willing], and last but not least it’s fun to say :)”
Erik chose an independent Spanish teacher because “everyone deserves to have a job where they have a living wage and are supported in being their best selves. I believe this independent teaching collaborative, which allows profits to go directly to the people doing the work, contributes to a world where more individuals are being appropriately compensated. I support this vision and love these teachers!”
Join Erik and begin your own Spanish language journey by contacting one of the independent Spanish teachers below.
We are a nonprofit organization helping independent Spanish teachers in Guatemala. We are NOT a Spanish language school. The independent Spanish language teachers listed here offer you high-quality, low-cost Spanish classes. One hundred percent (100%) of the money you pay for classes goes directly to the teachers.
The Network of Independent Spanish Teachers, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of female independent Spanish teachers in Antigua, Guatemala.
The $12/hour price point was set after we researched the prices of the better Spanish schools and academies in Antigua. Most charge $15 to $18 per hour of instruction while paying their instructors only $2.50 to $4 per hour. One hundred percent of what you pay with our nonprofit organization goes directly to the teacher. Furthermore, the teachers pay nothing to participate in our organization.
Can you find cheaper Spanish instruction? Yes, but you need to ask yourself, "If I'm paying $10 per hour (or less) for Spanish instruction, how little is my teacher earning?"
Our mission is to help female independent Spanish teachers earn a dignified, living wage. Be part of the solution of improving the lives of these hard-working women and learn the valuable and enriching skill of speaking Spanish!
Your time and money are valuable. If you're curious about taking a one-on-one Spanish class online, you can try a no-obligation, free 30-minute session with the independent teacher of your choice. Scroll down and click on the picture of one of the teachers to schedule your free trial class.
