Meet Michael, a retired merchant marine officer learning Spanish because he “would like to participate in Latin American life and culture.” He has been visiting Latin America for years and has recently made some friends in Guatemala. He says, “I have been studying Spanish with NETIST teacher Edna Aragón, in person and online, since June of last year.”

Michael chose a NETIST independent Spanish teacher because "I like the learning model for myself as a student that Edna is focused on my language progress and the teaching model for the teachers to tailor the lesson plan while earning a living wage.”

When traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, learning Spanish enhances his travel experience. He says, “It is extremely rewarding to be able to communicate with the people.”

His favorite word is bienvenido because “I am always made to feel so very welcome in Guatemala.”

The Network of Independent Spanish Teachers, Inc. is  a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of female independent Spanish teachers in Antigua, Guatemala.  

The $15 (USD) per hour price point was set after we researched the prices of the better Spanish schools and academies in Antigua. Most charge $18 to $22 per hour of instruction while paying their instructors only $2.50 to $4 per hour. One hundred percent of what you pay with our nonprofit organization goes directly to the teacher. Furthermore, the teachers pay nothing to participate in our organization.

Can you find cheaper Spanish instruction? Yes, but you need to ask yourself, "If I'm paying $10 per hour (or less) for Spanish instruction, how little is my teacher earning?"
