About Network of Independent Spanish Teachers, Inc.

Student spotlight: Meet John and Maria

"Anytime I can be part of empowering women I say, sign me up!” --Maria

Meet John and Maria. John is retired from the US military, and Maria is a retired teacher.  They are learning Spanish because they have fallen in love with Guatemala and its people. They'll be here for 8 months volunteering and know that this immersive experience will help them master the Spanish language quickly.

When asked why they chose to study with an independent Spanish teacher, John said, “That’s easy. We tried schools but found Lisbeth and have learned way more than [in] any school. Lisbeth is so loving and patient.” Maria added, “It has been a pleasure working with Lisbeth. As a fellow teacher, I can say that her positive, encouraging approach to learning Spanish is very motivating, and I love knowing every quetzal goes directly to her. Anytime I can be part of empowering women I say, sign me up!”

Of course, they each have their favorite words in Spanish. John's favorite is amar (to love) “because the people and cultures here make me feel loved.” Maria's favorite word is arriba (up, above). “[It's] such a fun word to say. It’s like it can’t just be said; it has to be sung.”

They intend to travel to other Spanish-speaking countries in Central and South America in their journey of volunteering. Learning Spanish is giving them confidence and helping them to connect with people.

How little does it cost?

Classes with the participating teachers in NETIST, Inc. cost only $12 USD per hour.

The Network of Independent Spanish Teachers, Inc. is  a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of female independent Spanish teachers in Antigua, Guatemala.

The $12 (USD) per hour price point was set after we researched the prices of the better Spanish schools and academies in Antigua. Most charge $15 to $18 per hour of instruction while paying their instructors only $2.50 to $4 per hour. One hundred percent of what you pay with our nonprofit organization goes directly to the teacher. Furthermore, the teachers pay nothing to participate in our organization.

Can you find cheaper Spanish instruction? Yes, but you need to ask yourself, "If I'm paying $10 per hour (or less) for Spanish instruction, how little is my teacher earning?"

Our mission is to help female independent Spanish teachers earn a dignified, living wage. Be part of the solution of improving the lives of these hard-working women and learn the valuable and enriching skill of speaking Spanish!
